Total frat move lehigh1/18/2024 I think we will still take a look at the campus, but now I have "inside" information to share with her. She wants to go into the medical field so this may not be the school for her. I also don't think she is aware of the fact that it is known for engineering. Knowing about the climb to classes is something so important that you may not think about when visiting. Thank you so much for all the great information! It is is just what I wanted to know so valuable when you don't know the area. There is a 350 ft elevation change from the hill down to the business building. The school is built on the side of a mountain. Be aware - the main academic campus is v-e-r-y steep. The campus is beautiful, and Bethlehem is a great town. No longer should Lehigh be thought of as an engineering school. Speaking of the business school, Lehigh has been getting very good rankings lately. I attended the business school, so I may have been exposed to more of the conservative, pro-business thinking. That being said - it is a university, so there is going to be plenty of liberal thinking. On the political spectrum of colleges and universities in the US, Lehigh sways to the right. But the school has a huge endowment, so Lehigh provides many resources and opportunities for students that might not be present at most schools of this size. To correct one of the posts, the current enrollment is slightly less than 5,000 undergrads - so the size is small. I'm a graduate of Lehigh, and most of the information presented above is accurate. Overall, it's a very solid academic school, but I don't find the university wants to challenge students beyond their degrees. There are liberal enclaves here and there, but they are definitely in the minority. Most of the students are white, rich, and either from (a) Long Island, or (b) New Jersey. In recent years, a right-wing newspaper, The Lehigh Patriot, has come to prominence. The "College Navigator" statistics are for on-campus activities only - anything off-campus is of not much concern for the university.Īs for conservative/liberal: the school is definitely on the conservative end. So, heck, you don't even need to join a frat or even be remotely involved with a frat to go from party to party. The real parties are at off-campus houses, where the police tend to be quite liberal in letting things go, and where there's almost no university scrutiny involved. I use quotations because (a) the frats are all a good ways uphill of the normal campus, so the only students going up are usually going to be fraternity brothers and sorority sisters, and (b) they usually stay open off-campus at a house that can be much closer to campus. Yes, the school has kicked out frats off of its 'campus' for bad grades and other such infractions. It's hardly put a dent on drinking at all. The administration has been cracking down on them in the last five year though so the drinking isn't as bad as it used to be. Lehigh is generally thought to be a conservative school, with frats being pretty popular. The campus is beautiful, set on a hill on the South side of Bethlehem. It has a great local reputation for being a hard work/hard partying school. If you come up here to visit Lehigh, you might want to look at some of the other Lehigh Valley Colleges - we have 6 within 30 minutes of each other including Muhlenberg and Lafayette.Īnother great College website is - Parents Forum - College Discussion I too am starting a College search for my sophomore son, and we might be looking at West Chester as a safety. Have you been to this site - College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics ? This is great for giving you fast facts about a college. My husband did roughly that commute for over a year before we moved up here and it was not a pretty one. You can add another 30 to 45 minutes for traffic because once you hit Plymouth Meeting, every road between there and WC can get clogged. This distance between WC and Bethlehem is about an hour and a half. 02NYC, Hope you don't mind that I moved your post, but I think the posters in the Lehigh Valley (where Lehigh is located) may be able to help you more then the ones in Philadelphia.
